First, the name: Beefree is now RGE Studio

If you searched for a "Beefree alternative", the product map changed under you in May 2026: Beefree's web builder moved into the Really Good Emails platform as RGE Studio. Beefree remains the company, and Beefree SDK remains its separately priced embeddable editor.

That rebrand is worth pausing on, because it illustrates the structural trade of every hosted design tool: the vendor can rename, repackage or reprice the product your workflow depends on, and your only input is reading the announcement. Card takes the opposite trade. It is an open-source (AGPL-3.0) application you deploy yourself — nobody can move, rebrand or sunset the editor running on your own infrastructure.

What Card gives you

Card is a free visual email editor built with Vue and TypeScript, developed in the open since 2022. RGE Studio is a maintained hosted workspace: shared projects, brand controls, approvals, a large template library and integrations. If your bottleneck is many contributors working against deadlines, that layer has real value — and Card does not provide it. What Card removes is the meter attached to it. RGE Studio's free plan caps you at 10 designs, 6 exports per month and a two-version history; unlimited usage starts at $30 per month per plan tier, with business features at $160.

Card has no export counter, no design cap and no version paywall. The cost you take on instead is operational: hosting a static app, arranging storage for exported JSON, and wiring your own handoff into the sending platform.

The honest comparison with Beefree SDK

For product teams, the arithmetic is starker. Beefree SDK starts at $400 per month and scales to $3,000; hosting the editor inside your own cloud is reserved for the $6,000-per-month Enterprise tier. In exchange you get a supported, documented SDK with vendor-managed infrastructure — a real benefit if editor engineering is a distraction you are paying to avoid.

Embedding Card costs licence compliance instead of subscription fees: the source is open, self-hosting is the default rather than the top tier, and your engineers own upgrades and the bridge into your product's storage and auth. Both editors preserve editable design data, but the formats are editor-specific — whichever you pick, test a full load-edit-save-reopen-export cycle before committing.

Who should switch — and who shouldn't

Switch to Card if you are paying (or about to pay) for what is fundamentally an editor, if export caps and cloud storage of your designs chafe, or if SDK pricing puts vendor embedding out of reach. Stay with RGE Studio if a distributed email team genuinely runs on its workspace, and evaluate Beefree SDK if vendor support is a requirement your budget covers.
